Steve Kirby is a founding partner of Bluestem Capital Company. He is a graduate of Arizona State University with a BS Degree in Political Science and a graduate of the University Of South Dakota School Of Law with a Juris Doctorate Degree. Mr. Kirby was secretary and senior claims counsel for Western Surety Company, a national surety bond company, from 1977-1992. He was the 35th Lieutenant Governor of the State of South Dakota from 1993 through 1995. He was also a candidate for Governor of South Dakota in 2001-2002. Mr. Kirby is a member of local, state and national Boards of Directors. He is a speaker at various entrepreneurial and college forums. Steve was recognized with the Spirit of Enterprise Award from South Dakota’s Enterprise Institute for his commitment, dedication and achievements in entrepreneurship. He has received the Spirit of Sioux Falls award in recognition of his leadership and economic development. He also received the USD Financial Management Association's Outstanding Financial Executive award. Steve is married to Suzette (Hustead) and their children are: a son Jon (employed at Bluestem) and his wife Tracy and family living in Sioux Falls, a daughter Kelly and her husband Travis Behrens and family living in Rochester, Minnesota, and daughter Katherine living in Sioux Falls.
Tyler J. Stowater is Partner and Vice President of Bluestem. He graduated from South Dakota State University with a BS Degree in Agriculture Economics (1984) and a MS Degree in Economics (1986). Tyler spent eleven years with the State of South Dakota's Bureau of Finance and Management. During his tenure, Tyler held the position of budget analyst, state economist and deputy commissioner. In 1997, Tyler left the State to become an Assistant Vice President at Citibank South Dakota with business analysis responsibilities in the North American Cards Customer Service Unit. Tyler joined Bluestem in 2000 and is currently in charge of portfolio management with responsibilities including the evaluation of prospective companies, structuring, negotiating and performing due diligence for various investments made by Bluestem. He monitors and provides assistance to existing portfolio companies and holds multiple Board of Director positions. In the spring of 2016, Tyler was given the Distinguished Alumnus award at the 62nd Annual Celebration of Excellence in Economics at South Dakota State University. Tyler is married to Joni (Klosterman) and they have two children, McKenzie (Otterberg) and McCord.
Sandy Horst, Partner and CFO of Bluestem, graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Dakota in 1987 with a BS degree, majoring in accounting. Upon earning her CPA license, she began her career with McGladrey & Pullen, LLP, the 7th largest national certified public accounting firm, in Moline, Illinois. She later transferred to Sioux Falls where she was promoted to Senior Manager in the Tax Department. In 1998 she joined Bluestem, taking responsibility for financial reporting, SBIC compliance, asset/liability management, taxation, budgeting, treasury/cash management, corporate profitability accountability and risk management. Sandy plays a key role in driving the financial management, planning and controls throughout the organization and is an integral part of Bluestem's on-going success. Sandy's son, Michael, attends the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Nikole Mulder, Partner and Vice President, has been with Bluestem since September of 2002. She graduated with honors from the University of South Dakota with a BS in Business Administration and a Master of Professional Accountancy. As a CPA, Nikole worked with Eide Bailly LLP prior to joining Bluestem. Her primary responsibilities include SBIC-related reporting and financial analysis for our portfolio companies. She provides critical support at Bluestem while working with invested and prospective companies in a variety of functions and holds positions on the Boards of Directors of existing portfolio companies. She provides exceptional financial analysis and support to our portfolio companies and investors alike. Nikole is married to Jeremy Mulder and they have a daughter, Camdyn and son, Cayle.
Yvonne Laur, Administrative Assistant of Bluestem, joined the team in January of 2001. She is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University where she earned a BA in Business. Yvonne held numerous professional positions during her twenty year tenure at New York Life Insurance Company in Sioux Falls. Responsible for daily operational and logistical management, Yvonne’s support is integral to Bluestem’s success. Along with her work at Bluestem, Yvonne is involved in several volunteer activities in the community. Yvonne's family includes her beloved husband, Roxy (d. 1948-2011), son Aaron and his wife Laurie and family, and daughter Christina and her husband Mark Nuerenberger.
Michele Kleinwolterink, Executive Assistant, joined Bluestem in March of 2005. She has worked in management and supervisory roles with Sioux Falls companies such as Lawrence & Schiller and most recently AmeriPharm, Inc. Her diverse background includes marketing, training, project management and accounting. Michele provides technology, project management and operational support for the Bluestem staff. Michele is married to Tim and they have a son, Eric.
Jon Kirby, Senior Associate of Investor Relations, joined Bluestem in 2012. His responsibilities include investor relations and evaluating prospective companies. Prior to joining Bluestem, he was a Senior Consultant at TIAA-CREF in Denver, Colorado managing investment accounts. Before TIAA-CREF, Jon worked in sales and business development for a marketing venture in the Denver area. Jon holds a B.S. from Colorado Christian University and an MBA from the University of Sioux Falls. He is also a recent graduate of the 28th class of Leadership Sioux Falls. Jon is married to Tracy (Domingo) and they have a daughter, Avianna and son, Wesley.
Drew Doshier, Investment Associate, joined Bluestem in 2017. His responsibilities include working with existing portfolio companies and analyzing new investment opportunities. Drew previously worked at US Bank, developing the use of capital markets products within its Community Banking division. He began his career in its Sioux Falls office, underwriting a variety of small and middle market commercial credits. Drew grew up in Rapid City and graduated magna cum laude from Augustana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics.
